College Board said the SAT Weekend of 9 March 2024 was the first fully digital administration in the US, completing the switch from paper that began internationally a year earlier. More than 200,000 students sat the test at 3,000 centres in 173 countries that weekend, and College Board reported that 99.8% completed and submitted their tests through Bluebook. In the week before, over 400,000 students took the digital SAT or PSAT tests during the school day.

Key facts

  • What Digital SAT replaces paper in the US
  • From 9 March 2024
  • Length Just over 2 hours (paper: 3 hours)
  • App Bluebook

How the digital SAT differs

  • It takes just over two hours, compared with three for the paper test.
  • Reading and Writing passages are shorter, each with a single question.
  • A calculator is allowed on the whole Math section, and Bluebook includes a graphing calculator.
  • Bluebook has a timer, annotation tools and full-length practice tests. If the internet drops or a battery dies, students can carry on without losing work or time.
  • Students can use their own laptop or tablet or a school device, and can borrow one from College Board for weekend testing.

The SAT School Day window in spring 2024 ran from 4 March to 26 April.

What this means

The paper SAT is no longer offered, so all preparation should be on the digital format. Download Bluebook and take the official full-length practice tests on the device you will use on test day. Older paper practice books are useful for skills, but their timing and passage style no longer match the real test. Check the Bluebook device requirements before you register, since minimum operating systems are raised from time to time.
