The SAT went digital outside the US in March 2023, a year before the US switch. College Board chose to start internationally, and its test specifications said the graduating class of 2024 would be the first international group to sit the digital SAT, with US students following from the class of 2025.

Key facts

  • What International SAT moves to digital
  • From March 2023
  • Who Students testing outside the US (class of 2024 first)
  • Format R&W 54 questions, 64 min; Math 44 questions, 70 min
  • Scale 400 to 1600, unchanged

The new format

  • Two sections: Reading and Writing, with 54 questions in 64 minutes, and Math, with 44 questions in 70 minutes.
  • Each section is split into two modules, and the second module is pitched according to performance in the first.
  • The test is taken in the Bluebook app at a test centre, with a proctor.
  • Scores stay on the familiar 400 to 1600 scale.

College Board later reported that more than 300,000 digital SAT tests were given internationally, in 183 countries, between March 2023 and the US launch in March 2024.

What this means

All international SAT testing is now digital. Prepare with the official Bluebook practice tests rather than old paper materials, and practise on the same device you will bring. Read the Bluebook device requirements before registering, because an unsupported laptop or tablet will not run the test. If you do not have a suitable device, you can ask to borrow one from College Board when you register, at least 30 days before test day.

Because the two modules adapt, there is no benefit in rushing the first one. Accuracy in the first module decides how demanding the second will be, and the score reflects both. Take at least two full Bluebook practice tests under timed conditions so the pacing feels normal.
