The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles announced on 20 March 2025 that students aged 15 to 17 can take the Class D knowledge test from home, supervised by a parent or guardian. The test is the same two-part exam on rules of the road and road signs that is given in DMV service centers.

Who can use it and how

The online option is open to students who have completed the classroom part of driver training, once their driver training school has notified the DMV. It runs through KnowTo Drive, the DMV’s contracted test vendor, and costs $10 per attempt, paid to the vendor. The test remains free at DMV customer service centers. You need a laptop or desktop with internet and a webcam; tablets and phones cannot be used. The test is available in English and Spanish.

Applicants agree to the rules, register their supervising parent or guardian, answer identity questions, pay and take a control photo. Further photos are taken at random during the test to check identity. The pass mark is 80 percent. Two online attempts are allowed, each with the $10 fee; anyone who fails both must take the test at a DMV service center.

After you pass

A certificate of completion is emailed to you. You still need to visit a DMV service center with the certificate and your other documents to get your instruction permit. DMV staff review each online result, and the DMV suggests booking a service appointment for faster service.

What this means

If you are a Wisconsin student who has finished the classroom portion of driver ed, you can choose between a free test at the DMV or a $10 test at home. Check that your computer and webcam meet the requirements first, and study the Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook, because the content is the same either way. Start from the WisDOT knowledge test page.
