The British Council, IDP Education and Cambridge University Press and Assessment announced on 31 July 2025 that they have signed a new three-year Deed of Agreement with Australia’s Department of Home Affairs. The agreement keeps IELTS on the list of English tests approved for Australian visa and migration purposes, subject to legislative changes that were then still being finalised.
Key facts
- Announced 31 July 2025
- Agreement Three-year Deed of Agreement with the Department of Home Affairs
- Tests IELTS Academic and General Training
- One Skill Retake Accepted for most subclasses, not 476, 482 or 485
What is covered
Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are covered. The agreement followed a full review by the department of the English tests it accepts. A week later, on 7 August 2025, the department introduced its updated list of nine accepted tests, with new score tables for tests taken from that date.
One Skill Retake
The department accepts IELTS results that include a One Skill Retake for most visa subclasses. The exceptions are subclasses 476, 482 and 485, which need all scores from a single sitting.
What this means
If you are planning an Australian visa, IELTS remains an accepted option. Before you book, check the exact score your visa subclass needs on the Home Affairs English language pages, and note that the tables changed for tests taken from 7 August 2025. If you are applying for a 476, 482 or 485 visa, do not rely on a One Skill Retake: you will need to reach the required scores in one full test. For other subclasses, a retake can save time and money if you fall short in one skill, but confirm it is available at your centre and accepted for your exact visa.
