IELTS changed the layout of the Test Report Form (TRF) for IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) tests from 29 August 2024. The standard IELTS Academic and General Training forms were not changed.
Key facts
- Announced 28 August 2024
- From 29 August 2024
- Tests IELTS for UKVI only
- New CEFR level per skill, performance summary, reference number moved
What is new on the form
- A CEFR level is shown separately for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, not only for the overall band.
- A new section summarises the test taker’s performance.
- The UKVI unique reference number has moved to the bottom of the form.
IELTS says the aim is to give more detail on each skill and to make the form clearer for UKVI’s own processing. The way scores are calculated, used and interpreted has not changed.
Which form you get
Anyone who took an IELTS for UKVI test on or after 29 August 2024 receives the new form. Replacement or extra forms requested after that date for earlier paper-based tests also come in the new layout. Computer-delivered tests taken before 29 August keep the previous version.
What this means
UK visa rules are set by CEFR level, often for each skill, so the new form makes it easier to see at a glance whether you have met, for example, B1 or B2 in all four skills. When you apply, use the unique reference number exactly as shown, since UKVI checks results through it. If your form is in the older layout, it is still valid; you do not need to request a new one for your visa application. Check the CEFR level for your route on GOV.UK before you book.
