USCIS updated its civics test updates page on 21 January 2025 to reflect the new administration. For the question on the President, the accepted answers became Donald J. Trump, Donald Trump or Trump. For the Vice President, the answers became JD Vance or Vance. On the 2008 test, the answer to the question on the President’s political party changed from Democratic to Republican.
Key facts
- President Donald J. Trump
- Vice President JD Vance
- Party of the President Republican (2008 test)
- Unchanged Speaker Mike Johnson, Chief Justice John Roberts
What stayed the same
The Speaker of the House answer remained Mike Johnson, and the Chief Justice remained John Roberts. The Supreme Court still has nine justices. Questions on your own state’s senators, your US Representative and your state governor always depend on where you live, and USCIS points applicants to senate.gov, house.gov and usa.gov to check them.
USCIS reminds applicants that some civics answers change because of elections, judicial appointments or changes in the law, and that you must give the name of the person serving on the day of your interview. When the 2025 civics test was introduced, the same page was updated again on 18 September 2025 to show these answers for both the 2008 and 2025 question lists.
What this means
Study materials printed before January 2025 may still show Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and those answers are no longer accepted for questions about who holds office now. Use the current answers from the USCIS test updates page, and check it again in the week before your interview in case anything has changed. Also look up your own senators, representative and governor in advance, because these are among the questions applicants most often miss.
